Many college administrators feel that social network sites can be dangerous. The number one reason that colleges claim they ban their athletes from these sites is because the information that is put on these sites is harmful to its image and it makes the university look bad. Since student athletes are considered to be held to higher standards and are known as ambassadors for the university, when a student athlete makes a post about how drunk they were or is tagged in a picture of them drinking they are showing the people that see their site that they are breaking the law. since they are the ambassadors of their college they seem to portray a view that their college is all about drinking and other embarrassing behavior. In many of the photos, the athletes who are drinking are part taking in regular college life, however they are underage and are breaking the law. The second biggest reason is because they are looking out for the well being of their students. The problem with claiming this what does that say about how the school feels about its non athlete students? Is their safety not worth as much as the student athletes? Students can access information on the person sitting next to them in class just as much as they can the star quarterback, assuming both are on Facebook. Another big reason, is that the university is worried about its student athletes being contacted or speaking with people who may ruin their eligibility.
