WoW Rhetorical Genre Analysis WRIT 1133 Rhetorical Analysis
  1. Find an academic article that is written in a similar style as the research paper you want to write. Yes, you will need to read the article, so find an academic article that is actually understandable and interesting to you. (Yes, you can find an article that is shorter too.) This article may or may not be on a topic related to WoW. However, the article should be written in the same style that you want to write your paper in. So, content is not important. The writing style and structure is important.
  2. Write a 2-3-page Rhetorical Genre Analysis of the academic article, answering all of the questions below.
  3. Include the name of the article you are analyzing. *Email me the article you are analyzing along with the article analysis.

Article Content Analysis

  1. Who is the audience(s) for this academic article? How do you know? What academic field is this article in? Be as specific as possible in describing the audience.
  2. What research tradition does this article use? (Does it used text-based, quantitative, or qualitative?)
  3. What is the research question asked in this article?
  4. What specific research methods are used in this article?
  5. Describe the research gap detailed in the research article.
  6. What are the findings of the study?
  7. Why are the findings of the study significant?

Writing Analysis

  1. What is the organization of the article?
  1. Briefly describe what each section with a heading does. In other words, describe the purpose of each section. For instance, what is the purpose of the abstract? What is the purpose of the methods section, etc?
  2. Is IMRAD used? Describe what parts of IMRAD are used.
  3. If IMRAD is not used, describe the organizational structure that is used instead.
  1. What voice is used in this article? Does the article predominately use first person ("I"), second person ("you"), third person (he, she, they, the researcher), or passive voice (passive voice lacks a direct person doing the action. For example, "research was conducted; the money was stolen, etc")?
  2. Is jargon used? (Are there any words or concepts that you can't understand? Be honest about this. Not being able to understand every single thing in the article is okay. In fact, it's to be expected in your first year of college.) If so, what are examples of jargon that is used?
  3. What is effective about this organization? Why?
  4. What aspects of this organization will you use in your own academic research paper?
  5. What aspects of this organization are ineffective?
  6. In what ways will you organize your paper differently instead?
  7. What voice will you use? Why?
