Jim Kalmbach explains "Proverbs for the First-Year Academic"

Several years ago, Michael Bokor, an Illinois State doctoral student from Ghana, created a delightful website about African proverbs Link: http://www.english.ilstu.edu/students/mjbokor/graduate_project/. While it is impossible to top pearls like “Only when you have crossed the river can you say the crocodile has a lump on his snout” or “He who cannot dance will say: ‘The drum is bad,’” I offer in this webtext a set of proverbs for the newly minted PhD.

As you read, imagine yourself at the opening scene of The Lion King as African puppets sashay down the aisle. Or perhaps you are Simba stretching in the sun, listening enraptured as the big cat licks himself and imparts what you hope is wisdom.
