Alan Hollingsworth, my mentor in graduate school, told me this one, but it is most useful for people who take non-traditional, innovative approaches to teaching. If you like to lecture, give tests, or assign twenty page papers, move on to the next proverb. Being a new faculty member does not mean you have to give up the innovative pedagogies you developed as a graduate student in order to fit in. Keep doing what you are doing, just don’t set out to change the world and try to convince your new department that your way of teaching is the only way to go. Instead let your students spread the word about your classes while you keep your head down and write. In the English department, word of mouth can be surprising effective.
