Using Rhetorical Media to Meet Outcomes

and Satisfy Stakeholders

Unit 4:

During this unit, students will write, film, edit and deliver the documentary film.  Like previously, the students will begin by writing a proposal.  In addition, they will submit weekly group progress reports via email, using appropriate email conventions.  They will then develop a  written documentary script to use as a template to outline their film.  Finally, they will film, and edit the film and prepare to present it to the class.

Unit Goals:  In this unit, students will

  1. 1.introduce students to film composing processes.

  2. 2.learn to use hardware and software necessary to produce and edit a digital film.

  3. 3.develop collaboration and problem solving skills.

  4. 4.allow students to make rhetorical choices about multi-modal compositions.

  5. 5.ask students to think critically about complex issues and make informed arguments.

  6. 6.understand conventions associated with script writing, proposal writing and film writing.

Goal Justification:

This final unit asks students to work collaboratively to produce a mutli-modal product.  This project will not be without its challenges.  Students will face problems together, but will use problem solving strategies to work through them.  This reliance upon one another may, as it has in prior classes, help keep students engaged, which might aid in their overall course success.

The project will provide another opportunity for students to engage in composing processes, to demonstrate rhetorical knowledge and to use critical thinking.  These elements will simply be operating in connection to film construction, rather than essay construction, as they had in Unit 1 and 2. As a result of the complex nature of the assignment and the technology required to succeed in it, students will demonstrate great ability to compose in electronic environments when they deliver their product.
