Me and my Celly

I did not have a cell phone until I was 17, and when I FINALLY got one it looked something like this: celly1.

It was such a lame looking phone that I would have rather not had one at all.  I had it for 4 months and then was without one again.

A month after I turned 18 I got a cell phone plan in my own name.

Since I am in control of my cell phone life now, my phone looks more like thiscelly2.

My parents thought that cell phones were not necessary and a waste of money (as they thought cable TV was also) so wireless communication is not something that I ever experienced growing up.  I guess that is why people get mad at me now because I do not always have my phone with me and can’t be contacted 24/7.  I feel like I am so different because I grew up without a cell phone and it was/is a necessity to anyone over the age of 12.  I look at it this way: there is evidence that the personal need for cell phones may be a bit unhealthy.

For instance:

I took a personal survey of the 20 girls (not including myself) on my cheerleading team and 18 of them said that they could not live without their cell phone.  I know it is not a nation-wide survey, but it is still a massive percentage.  I also asked them if they were trapped on a desert island what 3 things would they have with them, and 12 said their cell phone. It was not until I pointed out that there would be no reception that they realized how stupid of an answer it was for them to want to have a cell phone on a deserted island over, say, 5 million gallons of purified water.. or a boat.

I do not consider myself a digital immigrant when it comes to cell phones because I have had one for the past 2 years now and am pretty well coordinated with it, but a cell phone is not something that I would need to survive.
