As an instructor of writing interested in integrating technology into my classroom, I have spent a great deal of time exploring possibilities for online course management systems. My efforts have included creating course websites from scratch, using Web CT and Blackboard, and using open-source options such as Drupal, Mambo, and Moodle. This review focuses on Moodle, an open-source course management system (CMS) based upon sound pedagogical underpinnings and a well-designed interface. I used Moodle in my face-to-face first-year composition courses for two semesters and also have used Moodle as a student in a graduate rhetoric and composition course. Both experiences with Moodle were largely positive. This review examines Moodle from several angles including the philosophical, the pedagogical, and the practical.
