(1) By “currency” I refer not only the trade of Barthes’ cultural capital, where the writing course (and ultimate award of post-secondary credentials) typically affords students opportunities to deal in wider cultural (and therefore economic) circles; I use it also to refer to the aim proffered by many writing programs of educating writers in the rhetorical tradition writ large: to prepare students for responsible citizenship as it applies to current culture.
