» Easter eggs
Congratulations. You've just found one of the five easter eggs
contained in this essay.
As defined by EggsCentral.com,
easter eggs are "undocumented bits of code that come hidden
inside operating systems, applications, Web browsers, games, and
other programs." Though the origin of this practice is unclear,
easter eggs have appeared in computer software since at least 1977.
The nature of these hidden goodies ranges from credit screens for
programmers, to small games, to wacky features.
In including easter eggs in this composition, I mean to encourage
exploration of the essay as a whole while exploiting some of the
possibilities of New Media. I mean, too, to have some fun.
Four of the five easter eggs, including this one, are accessible
from the main navigation screen. The fifth one can only be reached
during the opening animation. The nature of my easter eggs varies:
some are references to other pieces (scholarly and otherwise) that
have inspired or influenced this work in some way, some provide
more information about the essay, and at least one is just for fun.
I encourage you to embark on an easter egg hunt, and I hope you
enjoy doing so. Please
let me know if you find them all.
