Although we ended up discontinuing our use of a tracking service,
such services remain a viable assessment strategy, with certain
advantages, disadvantages, and value:
Advantages
- Provides copious data, often in numerical and graphical form.
- Offers remotely hosted technical support and help, reducing
demand on programmatic or institutional technical support.
- Generates assessments that funding sources readily recognize.
Disadvantages
- Requires, often, code embedded in every page of the site, which
can impact site performance.
- Charges, frequently, for services.
- Imagines a corporate audience, which may be at odds with overall
goals of a writing program.
Value
- Ultimately, the value of this assessment lies in its ability
to provide the kind of data that appeals to internal and external
funding sources.
