This webtext is split into four sections.  Though the sections can be read in the following chronological order, it is also possible to read them in isolation from one another dependent upon readers’ familiarity with the topics addressed:

“Gamers as Community” first defines the gaming community, then discusses how gamers create literacy.

“Fan-fiction as Literacy” examines the community of fan-fiction writers and discusses the “rules” of fan-fiction writing.

“Borderlands Case Study” offers a short rationale for my focus on this game in my case study and analyzes “Gaige’s ECHO Logs” written by Discar on Fanfiction.net.  This section identifies the collaborative nature of fan-fiction writing and offers examples of successful writer/reader relationships.

“Pedagogical Implications” explores the possibilities of including a gamer-based fan-fiction writing component in the composition classroom, highlighting the writing skills addressed in the other sections.
