Section 4
The final section of the book divides its attention between sustaining scholarship and sustaining the environment, with some indications that sustainable scholarship could indeed also sustain the environment. In the first chapter of this section, Lisa Lebduska draws attention to the limited number of resources, both technological and intellectual, available and what this limited availability means for sustaining technology-rich environments. Building upon Lebduska, the second chapter by Shawn Apostel and Kristi Apostel discusses the increase in waste as a result of the push to use technology and offers suggestions about how to deal with waste in such a way that sustaining a technological ecology does not come at the expense of the natural environment. Finally, Cindy Selfe, Gail Hawisher and Patrick Berry argue that “we are the shepherds of digital humanities work, and sustaining this work is crucial for maintaining our relevance in our institutions and in the world.” Critique
