In spite of what some might think of as an unusual choice of topics, as a member of the audience it was difficult not to connect with Palmeri. He was friendly, personable, and obviously very knowledgeable. His enthusiasm for his work was clear, and when given the opportunity to answer questions he treated the mostly graduate student audience as intellectual equals rather than people to be talked down to. His presentation seemed less like a lecture in the traditional sense, and more like a conversation amongst peers; less like a stuffy collection of facts and references to other scholars and more like a look into an early stage in the process of discovery. It goes without saying that Palmeri brought an air of credibility to the 21st Century Englishes Conference, but his attitude and openness brought a level of enjoyment and enthusiasm that would be difficult to replace.
