Before the March

Agenda for the March

Starting Point at Compton Street

Excitement too – “people just want to come out and march” for something

International F& A.M. Masons Order of the Eastern Star is the group behind us.  (https://www.internationalmasons.org/).

(Says that they are...“A progressive 21st century religious fraternal order”)

Different agendas apparent on the signs

Several references to the Gillette razor commercial that made people mad

Signs of belonging to the group included:

-Pink, woven pussy hats, signs, rainbows?

Pins, pink beaded necklaces, flowers in the hair, headband

-“Impeach 45” balloons

-Flags too

-Planned Parenthood shirts

References to Malala and Greta Thurnberg.

Outside waiting - comfortable temperature71 degreesto about 80 degrees

Sunny/overcast

People sit on the ground waiting

Younger and older crowd

Intersectionality is talked about on signs of participants from many racial groups

There is music. Mostly upbeat

“Girl power”

The crowd is mostly white-presenting women – some white, black, and Hispanic-presenting men (I do not know their self-identifications and I recognize that visual presentation does not necessarily equate to self-identification, though I also recognize that visual presentation effects experiences in the world)

-Not everyone has shoes that look like they would be comfortable for me to walk in. But that is just me.

People took out their phones for Instagram

Several “mama” references on signs

“Mama bird”

-People had kids, dogs, and strollers. Kids were middle school aged to infants

Anxious excitement

Someone shouts from the front to ask if we are ready at 11:18

People start chanting.

We start walking at 11:19

Someone has a pewdiepie sign.  (associated with antisemitism) -(https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/youtuber-pewdiepie-dropped-by-disney-hailed-by-hate-groups-after-anti-semitic-videos_us_58a31b77e4b094a129eeffe3)

Chanting; “The people, united, will never be divided”
