» Online Survey
» Summary
The onine survey has become an invaluable assessment tool for our
program. Its mixture of data types provides useful feedback for
the program in further developing the site in ways that are legible
to a wide spectrum of audiences. But it's even more useful when
combined with some of our other modes of assessment. For example,
the statistical data on student visits to the website places the
data from the server logs in perspective: our peak traffic of over
800,000 hits could not reasonably come from our students alone.
It contextualizes, too, the anecdotal feedback we've received.
Thus, online surveys offer advantages, disadvantages, and value.
Advantages
- Data arrives electronically for easy evaluation and manipulation.
- Can direct the survey directly at target audiences.
- No costs involved in photocopying, distribution, or collection.
Disadvantages
- Because the respondents are so self-selecting, will not get
data from students with limited technological literacy or digital
access.
- No guarantees on response or sample size since the survey is
so voluntary.
- Requires some technological knowledge to set up.
Value
- Online surveys can combine the statistical data of tracking
services and server logs with the qualitative data of anecdotal
evidence, all while gathering assessments from highly targeted
audiences.
