Online Survey

Of over 6,000 writing program students in the fall of 2003, 792 completed the online survey, revealing some unexpected trends.

As indicated by Figure 4 below, the survey indicated that two of the most useful areas for students are the course descriptions and the teacher resources. We had always firmly believed in the transparency of our resources--students can access teacher resources and teachers can access student resources--but the online survey revealed that students valued these teacher resources far more than we imagined, more even than the resources we designed with them in mind.

The survey also revealed that a large portion of our students had never visited the site's pedagogical resources, despite our efforts to integrate the site across our curriculum and despite the ready access to computers on campus. Nearly 50% of students surveyed had never visited two of the main pedagogical resources, the Tutorama (a week-by-week self tutorial resource) and the Gradatorium (with sample papers and explanation of grading). Yet because the survey was administered solely online, we can assume that these students did not visit these areas because they did not have access. Rather, it's far more likely that we haven't yet done enough to let students know about our web site and its resources.
