The Fragmented Self
In, Fragments of Rationality, Lester Faigley writes “postmodern theory questions the existence of a rational, coherent self and the ability of the self to have privileged insight into its own process [and] denies that the self has universal and transcendent qualities but instead renders our knowledge of self as always contingent and always partial” (111). Like Myka Vielstimmig, who is cited elsewhere in this Web text, we wished to create a persona to more accurately describe the selves at work here. Although we are obligated to claim the individual voices of John Borczon and Paul Shovlin for our CVs, we still want to consider collaborative writing as something other than two separate voices, even within ourselves.

 

John Borczon is a Ph.D. candidate at Ohio University in Rhetoric and Composition. He is currently working of a dissertation focusing on how teachers use various forms of power in the classroom.

Paul Shovlin, a Ph.D. candidate in Rhetoric and Composition, is currently working on his dissertation focusing on critical pedagogy and Multi-user Domains Object-Oriented (MOOs). In addition to teaching with technology, Paul studies and writes about popular fiction. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in the country of Moldova. He lives in Athens, OH with his wife and child.
