This course on the theory and practice of academic hypertext had its conceptual roots in a conversation with Richard E. Miller, then Associate Director of the Rutgers University Writing Program. He suggested that students would soon be submitting essays as multimedia CD projects. As Coordinator for the Writing Program's principal research writing course, Research in the Disciplines, I immediately thought of my writing courses as those most suitable to multimedia projects. I began to locate ways to bring together our research writing courses and a course in the Writing Program's business and technical writing offerings called Web Authoring.
