In Spring 2003, I taught a special section of Web Authoring created to help students explore the research essay as hypertext. While this was the third time I had taught a version of this experimental academic hypertext course, it was the first time I had a full complement of students. In previous iterations, I had worked more informally with students on their academic hypertext projects. Most of my assignments were hypertext versions of the essay assignments for students' Research in the Disciplines courses. With my Theory and Practice of Academic Hypertext course on the books as Web Authoring, I assembled a more formal curriculum for students. I created a coursepack of readings and software tutorials, generated some tutorials myself, developed a complete set of assignments, located online web development resources, and packaged most of the materials into a course website.
