Notes

1. For a detailed discussion of defining different types of digital audio recordings, I recommend both Krause’s “Broadcast Composition: Using Audio Files and Podcasts in an Online Writing Course” and Dangler, McCorkle, and Barrow’s “Expanding Composition Audiences with Podcasting.

2. Yes, it’s a glib response that sidesteps the thorny issues of whether writing can be taught, whether composition instructors do actually teach writing, etc. Those are not issues on which I can change someone’s mind in a brief hallway conversation. But the response does emphasize that including audio essays in a composition class does not change the balance of what is accomplished in the class.

3. The first phase focuses on idea generation, freewriting, and initial drafting; the second phase focuses on global revision and development of voice, audience awareness, and structure; the third phase focuses on development of style, editing, formatting, and genre concerns.
