Paul and John, the researchers behind this project, first met in the communal adjunct office in Ellis 117. They applied to the Ph.D. program at Ohio University at the same time and were both accepted. They sat next to each other for two years of course work. This project marks their first attempt at joint authorship. Paul was a Peace Corps volunteer in Moldova. He is interested in computers and lake monsters. John sang in Radio Hanoi (a Punk Rock band based in Pittsburgh Pa.) in the early 1980s. He is interested in tournament chess and amateur astronomy.

The opening narrative lays the groundwork for one of the two ways we had of experiencing our research and also sets the scene for the (good-natured) tension that existed between the researchers. While John's focus was more teacher-centered, Paul had swallowed, what he calls, the postivist IRB mentality that had been ingrained in him at school. For John, a new teacher to computer classrooms, it was interesting how his relationship with his students was affected by the new addition of technology in the classroom. Paul focused more on the goals and objectives stated in the IRB. The resulting tension surfaced weekly in animated discussions at Casa Nueva, a hippy organic restaurant influenced by Mexican cuisine.
