Student evaluations aren't very useful. They can't be extricated from the institutionalized context within which they are situated. What the hell am I talking about? Think of the many layers of power, political mitigating factors, and sheer bureaucracy that get in the way of an objective evaluation. A reasonable counterclaim is that "objectivity" is bologna. The usefulness comes in the form of outing student perceptions...not objectiveness. Ok. So, what is it we are expecting from such evaluations? Students’ perceptions in light of the mitigating factors (which I imply exist but don’t specify or spell out here). Perhaps evaluations of policemen would function in similar ways if drivers were expected to complete them after being given a ticket.
